‘Hero’ fisherman sacrifices himself to help tourists stuck in mud
Your daily reminder that there are great people in the world who will help out a stranger just because it’s the right thing to do.
The couple in the video have been birdwatching with their camera in Thailand, but didn’t realise how dangerous the mud at Krabi riverbed could be and became stuck fast.
As hard as they struggle, they just seem to be held in place by the suction – in what could be a very dangerous situation as the tide rises and night falls.
A fisherman stops his boat and walks over to them, obviously more knowledgeable about how to manage in the mud but also a lot younger and fitter.
First he moves their camera and rucksacks, minimising their weight and making sure their belongings are safe.
Then he tries to pull and push both of them out but they’re still not budging.
After a few minutes of this he realises more drastic action is going to be necessary.
But he doesn’t call the emergency services or try and tow them away with a rope – he actually lies face down in the mud and lets them walk over him to get to safety, putting himself in danger to rescue them.
Thai Visa News reported the man’s name is Chat Ubonchinda and the couple are Norwegian. They added the couple have tried to contact him to show their gratitude, but he told reporters he didn’t want anything in return.
Redditor toreachtheapex put it well: ‘WHAT A HUMAN BEING! God, I only wish the world had more people like that man!’
TheLemonyOrange added: ‘A selfless act from the Thai man even though he doesn’t look like he’s got much himself. He could quite easily have taken their belongings but he didn’t, he laid in the damn mud for them!’
